Analysis of Sam and Dean's Fighting Style pt.2

After the first part of this analysis, i saw that a lot of people shared the same interest i have in the analysis of Sam and Dean's Fighting Style. I really appreciated the responses so i thought i'd make a second part, where i would analyse 10 other fights from the show, that shead even more light in to what fighting style they use in the show.

So let's get started.

  1. 2x19 Folsom Prison Blues-Dean vs Prisoner: This fight is from the episode where Sam and Dean get into a prison to eliminate a ghost that haunts it. Dean gets into it with an inmate, and at first defends against his attacks, but in the end finishes the fight quick and clean. In this fight Dean uses blocks, a body punch, two types of arm locks and in the end finishes the fight with a quick groin kick and a knee to the face. This fight again shows their MCMAP fighting style, which is based on Krav Maga, where the groin kick is a staple move because of it's effectiveness in finishing fights fast, especially used in dangerous situations.

  2. 10x07 Girls, Girls, Girls-Dean vs Cole: This is a rematch of a previous fight these two had, in which Dean won easily, as he was a demon. In this fight, Dean fights Cole Trenton, who was ex military operative with real combat experience(two tours in Iraq, Darfur and the Congo). In this fight Dean's heavy kickboxing influenced style is shown, using a lot of kickboxing style moves and strategy. We see him use jabs, hooks, overhand hooks, body hooks, clinch knees, parrys, blocks, slips and a blocked punt kick. In general, a really good showcase of his kickboxing style of fighting.

  3. 10x23 Brother's Keepers- Dean vs Sam: Another fight of brother against brother, and another great showcase of their kickboxing style. In this one, Dean is shown using jabs, hooks, a combo of body hook-overhand hook, shovel hook, double arm block and slips. Sam on the other hand uses hooks, body hooks, back hand punches, helmet guards and parrys. This is a great looking boxing and kickboxing style fight.

  4. 13x19 Funerelia-Dean vs Bernard: This is quite an interesting fight because, once again, Dean goes up against a highly trained ex military operative, namely Bernard. In this fight Dean is shown to use more than straight kickboxing, because Bernard is too much of a threat, so he resorts to more technical moves, using knife disarms, jabs, hooks, body hooks, overhand hooks, clinch knees, parrys, slips, blocks, and two especially impressive moves in succesion, a wrestling style double leg takedown and a jiu jutsu style cross collar wrist choke. In this fight Dean shows his range of fighting techniques.

  5. 13x07 War of the Worlds- Dean and Sam vs Demons- Here Dean and Sam team up against three demons, who have ambushed them, and even though this is a showcase of their knife fighting abilities, we see two very interesting moves being done, which are a judo and jiu jutsu throw called tomoe nage or falling overhead throw, and Sam uses a kickboxing spinning back kick, both very impressive moves.

  6. 14x17 Game Night-Sam vs Nick and Dean vs 2 Demons: Here we have a set of fights, were Sam goes up against Nick, Lucifer's vessel, which is a short fight and Sam use, a block and elbow combo followed by a knee and throw. Typical self defence moves used in a great way. Dean on the other hand has a very long fight against the demons and it really is one of those fights that Dean really fights with a lot of technique and finesse in his punches, blocks and counter attacks. We see Dean use jabs, hooks, elbows, knees, Wing Tsun style blocks and counters which are very impressive and a knife reversal to stab the last demon, which is also very impressive.

  7. 15x07 Last Call-Dean vs Lee Webb: This on the other hand, is a typical hard hitting bar brawl, with pool cues breaking on backs and bottles being smashed on heads. We see Dean mostly using jabs, hooks, a swinging throw, blocks, slips, helmet guards and a weapon disarm in the end.

  8. 11x17 Red Meat-Dean and Sam vs Two Werewolfs: The episode opens, with Sam and Dean in the middle of a fight against two werewolfs, where Dean uses mostly a couple of punches and knife attacks, but Sam uses a bunch of moves, like a leg sweep, headbutt, punches, a push kick, blocks, slips and an underarm throw.

  9. 7x03 The Girl Next Door-Sam vs 2 bullies: So the scene is set, Sam at the age of 16, sees a girl that he likes in a library and when he sees two guys harassing her, he steps in and defends her. He uses blocks, jabs and shoulder strikes. It's a quick fight but shows Sam's fighting skill from a young age.

  10. 8x10 Torn and Frayed-Sam and Dean vs 2 Demons: This is a standard fight where we see both Dean and Sam use regular jabs, hooks and knees but we also see Dean use a counter to a knife and then use a roundhouse kick to the midsection followed by a kick to the face. And Sam uses a push kick followed by a stab to the back of the demon by Dean.

So here we are, another ten fights, which solidify Sam and Dean's fighting style as MCMAP, again with a heavy influence of kickboxing. I feel that the show always has a pretty realistic feel to their fights, and they show how this fighting style would be used in real fights, as opposed to other shows and movies that make the protagonists use too much technique and take away from the realism of the fights.
