Dear X-Men: Evolution fans-- I was wrong
For almost completely arbitrary reasons, I wrote the show off without even watching it. I watched Wolverine & the X-Men while it was airing and saw all of TAS and '97, but I just never really cared about Evolution. Which is weird since Cyclops headlines it, and he's my favourite guy! It was a combination of it not really being available anywhere (now), it coming out in a weird time (for me), and my unjustified judgment of some of the shows creative decisions that I made without even watching a single episode.
But I sit here today to say, thanks to a lovely user here who shared an Archive upload of the entire series, I gotta say: I was so insanely wrong.
This show is fantastic. It might be the best one-- though '97 could probably beat it with a few more seasons. I expected a trimmed down cast of mutants and weak school plots but oh my god it's the opposite.
I love the slow burn growth the characters go through and the subtle but meaningful shifts to the shows status quo (at least early on). I'm only on season 3 episode 3 so no spoilers, but damn. If I was making my own Ultimate Universe, this would basically be how I'd do Ultimate X-Men lol
Cyclops is great in this show ofc but I want to give a shoutout to Wolverine. I don't normally like Logan, but this is exactly what I love from Wolverine. Mysterious past, gruff trainer with a heart of gold, and likes to hang out on his own must of the time. It helps that he's not in a love triangle. Really appreciate this shows take on all the X-Men though!
I thought Spyke would kinda be a boring original character (again, a baseless assumption I made) but I like him a lot! Wouldn't be mad if he jumped to comics.
One thing though. During the season 1 finale, I laughed out loud when Scott and Alex emerged from Magneto's Enhancer as fully grown men. That's such a funny goofy visual, it's right out of Teen Titans Go I love it
Tldr: X-Men: Evolution is really good and I'm going to go back to watching it now
