What happened to this squirrel?

His body and fur is 100% in tact but his eyeballs/nose are gone so he must have been dead for a while.

My dog found it next to a tree that has been surrounded by snow all winter. Normally we don't go over there, but we did today because the snow has melted in the last few days.

I'm wondering if he froze in the tree & fell down, or maybe was buried in the snow (but his fur seems dry).

IMO it looks like was pushed. Evidence of homicide

It's strange to me because we have a lot of owls, coyotes, and other predators. Why has this squirrel gone long enough to decompose without being scavenged?
