How to handle killer tomato / rat armies?

How do I deal with these when their number is far too high to count?

Some ideas I have include stingers to deal damage, cluster bangs to crowd control, tear gas to blind and force them to cough, and trying to get the warden to very quickly produce explosive payload grenades before it's too late. Are these viable answers?
