Puppy hates the car, what else can/should we be doing?
Looking for some advice, suggestions…
My partner and I have a 20 week old golden retriever… let’s say it’s been a rollercoaster!
She’s never liked the car from the moment we picked her up; thrown up a couple of times, whines, stress yawns, salivates all the signs of anxiety.
We got to a point a couple of weeks back where she wouldn’t go near the car, and would pull in the opposite direction. We’ve worked on it and with a little (or a lot) of encouragement from some trusty hotdog sausages she now will actually jump in to her car seat. Step one!
Of course this hasn’t solved the anxiety which leads us to believe she doesn’t like the motion.
Step 2. After a suggestion from doggy daycare we’re trialling motion sickness tablets. While there’s a major difference in her behaviour (less whining, less stress yawns, less pacing and more sitting) she still very obviously doesn’t want to be there and still badly salivating.
I’m guessing it’ll take her a while to realise she’s not going to feel sick and maybe it’s the stress that she’s waiting for it but I suppose my question if what should our next steps be if she doesn’t make any improvements?
Is there anything else we should be doing other than taking small journeys with the sickness tablets?
