[Meet Report] Western Sydney Open Powerlifting | M | 537.5kg | 73kg BW | 392 DOTS - 1st Meet/1st Place

Background

Been lifting for about 7 years now, and originally wanted to compete in bodybuilding, till I realised as a natural, it would be hard to get very far. Lifting heavy has always been my biggest focus and have always considering going into powerlifting. 2 months out of a comp, I decided to finally just send it and register for my first novice comp.

Training

I followed Sheiko's AML for about 1 month out, but never did any extreme prep for the meet. I felt I wasn't too blessed with time, so I lifted heavy where I could.

Meet Prep

Didn't prep too much, but did a slight water cut in the week leading up to the comp. Deloaded the week of the comp.

Meet Day

Squat

170 - ⚪🔴⚪

Slight issue's with going on command for the single red light. I literally blacked out, and didn't have a clue what was going out. The nerves of first lift really got to me and I was extremely anxious about the beginning.

180 - ⚪⚪⚪

190 - ⚪⚪⚪

190 met with a bit of resistance and had a sticking point mid-lift. But grinded it out and managed to put-up the 190kg

Bench

120 - ⚪⚪⚪

130 - ⚪⚪⚪

140 - 🔴🔴🔴

I was extremely gutted by this lift. I put it up clean, with great form, but being my first meet, I rushed the command, and didn't get the start command. I was gutted by this, but it was a really good learning experience!

Deadlift

200 - ⚪⚪⚪

210 - ⚪⚪⚪

217.5 - ⚪⚪⚪

217.5 left me lightheaded towards the end and feeling faint. This is evident when I step away from the barbell, and take a moment to take back my composure and not fall over! During training, I managed to hit a 220kg, but blacked out at the top of the lift, and ended up on the floor. I didn't want a repeat of that situation, so toned it back a tiny bit. I think this was the smarter decision during the situation.

Summary - 8/9 ⚪

What an amazingly fun experience for my first meet. I managed to take 1st place overall in my first novice competition and couldn't be more stoked with the experience. I'm curious to know where I will be able to go from here, and would love to continue pursuing powerlifting!
