Why did they choose "Chikorita, Tepig and Totodile" as the starter additions for Kalos? Do they have any references in common in this regard?
I've been wondering about this for a while, ever since I first saw the trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A and the chosen starters. We all know that the region is set in Kalos and is particularly inspired by France, and those who have played Pokémon X/Y are familiar with its story and specific details.
So, here's the question I want to ask you: "What is the reason for choosing these starters? Do they have a special connection to Kalos?"
Honestly, I'm not an expert in these things, but I’d love to hear your opinions as well. For now, I can only make speculations and theories, since we just recently got the trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Maybe Chikorita might be linked to the "rebirth" of Kalos. After all, Chikorita symbolizes nature and growth, which contrasts with the destruction caused by the war in Kalos. It could also tie into Kalos' philosophy of beauty, as Meganium is often described as an elegant and harmonious Pokémon.
Totodile, on the other hand, and its evolutionary line are more aggressive and predatory. Its final evolution, Feraligatr, has a more brutal and powerful design, which could represent the phase of conflict and destruction during the war in Kalos. It might symbolize Kalos’ violent past and its process of rebuilding.
Tepig, however, is a bit harder to place. Its evolution, Emboar, seems to be inspired by Chinese warriors, but it could also be interpreted as a gladiator or a knight. Kalos has a medieval and chivalric aesthetic (as seen in the Elite Four and Mega Evolution). Emboar might represent the strength of an ancient warrior from the war in Kalos. Additionally, its Fire typing could symbolize both the destruction caused by AZ's weapon and the passion and willpower to rebuild the region.
If the game introduces new Mega Evolutions for these Pokémon, they could be:
Mega Meganium → With a more mystical and healing appearance, emphasizing its role as a symbol of peace after the war.
Mega Feraligatr → With a more imposing and warlike design, symbolizing the chaos of war.
Mega Emboar → With a more elaborate armor, making it resemble a knight or an ancient warrior of Kalos.
Of course, these are just theories, and we can't know for sure what the game will bring. Plus, from the trailer, it seems that the Kalos in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set in the future, so there might be even more surprises.
I don't know what else to say. Let me know what you think and share your opinions!
