Portable monitor sanity check

Looking to add a portable monitor under my main display for productivity tasks, while researching it seems some people have connectivity troubles. Is it as simple as connecting the usb c to my mobo or do I do the hdmi from GPU to the mini hdmi on monitor? Thanks
