Question regarding a “pseudo-infinite” combo
Hi! I was wondering if I could get some clarification on how exactly this combo resolves.
Essentially the board state is Mothman, Altar of the Brood, and Altar of Dementia. Scurry Oak is then played, triggering Altar of the Brood for all opponents to mill 1. If one nonland card is hit then Mothman creates a +1/+1 counter to place on Scurry Oak which then creates a Squirrel Token, continuing the combo.
Technically this isn’t infinite, as both opponents milling land would break the cycle of creating Mothman counters. This is helped by having Altar of Dementia since you can sacrifice squirrel tokens to keep milling for more Mothman triggers.
My question is: How can this combo be beaten? If something like Abrade is cast to destroy my Altar of the Brood once the combo has started, can I manipulate the stack to continue the combo? I.e. in response to Abrade, sacrifice X Squirrel Tokens/etc. using Altar of Dementia and then rebuild the same Altar of the Brood combo on top of the stack?
I hit this combo last night and it didn’t matter since both opponents were tapped out, but it got me questioning if there is a way to stop it once it starts? I don’t want to hit the combo again and have someone play a possible answer, and not know exactly how it would resolve. I can find opinions for other combos online that both refute and enforce my view of how the combo works, so I figure this would be the best place to ask.
Thank you!!!
