Is it okay to raise caterpillars I find outside?

I want to raise caterpillars during spring, but i don't know if they would be happier outside. I don't want to make them sad if I put them in an enclosure instead of letting them stay outdoors.

Also, when they are done pupating I will let them fly away outside because I know as moths they want to be outside not inside.
