What jacket would you wear with Black Watch tartan trousers?

Probably not something many people are going to need to think about in their lives but i'm stuck. Keeping away from something super formal or traditional would you go with a basic suit jacket or maybe a velvet jacket or tux? And in what colour? Black or Navy?
