What book, lessons, solo study, or standard study really elevated your playing?
For me I really am content with what I got out of these:
Kurt Rosenwinkel: Creative Exercises for Modern Guitar
Jazz Standards Playbook Volume 1
African Skies - Michael Brecker
Stella By Starlight
I'm a hobby player and I listen to a ton of jazz fusion. I have been studying standards and drafting my own chord melody arrangements & have trancscribed solos by ear.
I'm not very good at rhythm sight reading. So for my transcription of African Skies, I just got all the notes tabbed out and I have to adjust it exhaustively by ear.
I'd like to play more like Mike Stern, Michael Brecker, Frank Gambale, Kurt Rosenwinkel etc but I feel like I must study standards to eat my vegetables.
I am considering Tim Miller's lessons or the second jazz standards playbook. Might go with Tim Miller just to see his methods.
any recs? must haves?
