Sliding Glass Door - Prevention?

We woke up one morning to the dreaded sight of foggy glass on our sliding glass door. The seal had failed. Replacing the door was ridiculously expensive but finding someone competent to replace the glass took a lot of time.

We would like to prevent this from happening again. The installer said a major factor was the heat coming from the door baking in a southern exposure. Adding tinted glass to the door would have increased the price by X3 and wouldn't have done much about the heat. The shade person said our area is too windy for a large enough shade to protect the glass.

Any ideas on how to deal with this?
