Looking for some advice about playing in the wind
Hello. I was wondering if anyone has any sources for information about playing a round with significant wind gusts. There was a course I played yesterday for the first time - links style, very flat, horrible fescue, and some water hazards - but the biggest hazard k was dealing with was the wind. 23mph gusts across this flat course. The part that I struggle with is compensating my shot or club choice for the wind and I'd like some help.
I generally understand if there's a head wind I should club up and if there's a tail wind I should club down. Where it gets confusing is figuring out yardages after accounting for the wind. Is it different when you're using a driver compared to a wedge? Is a 50% swing going to be as impacted by the wind as a full swing? If the wind is straight left to right, do I aim 5 yards over? 10 yards? 50 yards?
It wasn't an awful round by any means, but at one point I had a 180 yard shot into a head wind, clubbed up to my 210 club and thought I poured it over the green only to watch it land 8 yards short of the green. Confused, later on I had a similar down wind shot that was 235 out and I once again used my 210 club thinking the wind would help. Landed on the back of the green but bounced and rolled out into some bad rough maybe 20 yards behind the green somehow.
If anyone has seen any videos that sort of explain how the pros account for the wind during their rounds that would be great. Thanks 👍
