iso: immersive, story-heavy games with compelling characters? (for Switch or Mac)

I work an awful job with ridiculous hours and the one time a year I have actually have time to really get lost in a video game is over winter break. Normally I'll hear about some games over the course of the year that pique my interest so I'll have a list ready to go, but I've realized this year I don't have anything queued up, and would hugely appreciate some recommendations!

I love immersive, story-heavy games; great characters are a massive plus, and I prefer more open-ended games where a player's choices actually impact the story progression/outcome (although that's not a deal-breaker). Gaming is my "me" time, so nothing that requires being online/multiplayer.

Last year I played Baldur's Gate 3, which I loved.

Other games I've really enjoyed include Disco Elysium, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, The Outer Worlds (an all-time fave), RDR2, Return of the Obra Dinn, Stardew Valley, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom (although I really wish there was more to the characters and relationships in the Zelda games).

The one thing I'm really not into is jump scare horror games—I don't mind creepy imagery or gore, but something like The Last of Us stresses me out. I love strategy and I'm not terrible at combat but Elden Ring was beyond my skill level.

I'll have my Switch and my laptop (Macbook Pro, M1 2021; handled BG3 well).

Any recs?

(note - dated someone who worked on Outer Wilds for a bit and it didn't end well, so not that one...)
