Where should I start with dragon quest?

Is it like a final fantasy or pokemon kind of series where if I don't play every single game then I won't know anything about the future games and I'll be ridiculed over not playing the whole series? I also know there's an anime but RN I just want to play the game first before diving into that. Lastly the consoles I have are switch, steam, and PS4 so where do I start?
