Heating/Electric Bill
Hi! We inherited a century home (1920) and this is our first winter here. Our first two electric bills were during our shockingly warm fall. Then bitter winter hit, and it bitterly hit us in the face with an insane bill.
I recently learned that geothermal heating relies on an electric heat pump and that’s what -aux heat on- meant on our thermostat. Unfortunately for me, that meant a very, very expensive bill. To the tune of $700 the first month, which unfortunately arrived halfway in the next billing cycle of the even colder month. That one? $800.
Basically, I need tips and tricks to help insulate this home better. We started covering windows, finding drafts and putting spray foam in cracks and caulking windows. Running a space heater for 20 minutes before bed to warm the spaces that get coldest (my daughter’s room). It’s helping a lot and we’ve been able to turn the thermostat down without freezing. But I’m worried about the next bill still.
