Can you really train a cat to not scratch furniture?
Hello! I’ve never owned a cat, but my dad has really been wanting one and I’m trying to see if we’d be able to get one without it messing up the furniture. That’s my mom’s two requirements, no scratching the furniture, and not a lot of shedding.
We have a hypoallergenic dog so there’s not a lot of shedding, so I’m thinking maybe a Sphinx cat cause they are so soft. :)
Online I’ve been seeing a lot of things about training a cat to not scratch furniture with the scratching posts, but most of the comments I’ve seen say they still do it anyways, just less. Can you fully train a cat not to scratch it? I know they have nail caps you can use so I’m hoping a mix of those two would work, if not then I don’t think my dad is in luck haha. We would only adopt not buy a cat!
An alternative would be adopting a cat that’s been declawed, which could work but I’ve read they tend to have a lot of health problems due to this. Obviously want to say we would NEVER declaw a cat, I’m saying to adopt one that has already been declawed and needs a home.
Thanks for the help!
