What makes a Transformational festival stand apart "from a Mainstream" festival?

The term "transformational" festival seems to get thrown around a lot to describe independently run festivals that have something of a "spiritual vibe" these days, but to someone who hasn't been to these types of events, the whole thing seems really broad and hard to pin down...what makes a transformational festival different than a regular festival? What makes them special?
