Natalie and Coach Ben’s relationship is so tragic
One of the most heartbreaking relationships in Yellowjackets is between Coach Ben and Natalie. She was the first to figure out he was gay, and despite it being 1998, she didn’t care at all—she never judged him or made him feel unsafe. In a way, she saw him for who he really was before anyone else did, and maybe that’s part of why they had such a quiet understanding.
But that understanding is also what makes their story so tragic. They were two of the only ones left who hadn’t fully given in to the group’s darkness, but instead of that making them allies, it just left them both stranded—together but alone. Ben could have been a real source of guidance for Natalie, a safe person, but he was too lost in his own fear and grief to be what she needed. And Natalie, who so desperately wanted someone to choose her, to fight for her, had to watch as he pulled further away.
I can’t even imagine how Coach Scott felt when he saw the others crowning Natalie in season 2. Even if she was the queen, she still decided to go against the group and secretly help him when everyone else thought he burned down the cabin. She knew the consequences would bad if they found out but she still helped him.
I was actually shocked when Natalie killed him, even if she did it mercifully. The worst part is that she sat with him for hours, making sure he wasn’t alone, and that makes this all even sadder.
I don’t know, their whole dynamic just breaks me. What do you guys think?
