Question about termination

How come Elizabeth has the ability to terminate Sue and I'm assuming still stay alive afterwards but when Sue kills Elizabeth she ends up falling apart later and almost dying (Before she becomes Elisasue)?

If Elizabeth had successfully terminated Sue would Elizabeth still be alive afterwards or would she too have fallen apart because they're technically one?
