What exactly made the set of Supernatural so special?

I’ve seen a lot of quotes from cast and crew that the Supernatural set was really unique. Many had bad experiences on other shows but loved working on Supernatural.

I know nothing about TV or movie sets… What negative experiences do people usually have in the TV industry? And what exactly made working on Supernatural so special?
