Are there any countries which typically give more/less time on the visa than others?

For example, my friend has always received visas from Italy which only allow her very short visas - the exact length of the trip. She is convinced that Sweden is much more generous. Is this all apocryphal? I’m willing to get any country but really want at least 3 months on the visa to make this whole saga worth it!
