Customs and Border Protection Scam
Haven't seen one of these recently so just thought y'all should be made aware. I got a call today from a local number stating they were Customs and Border Protection (CBP) they knew my name, address and obviously phone number.
The "agent" gave me some rudimentary information, as to why I was being called, what the procedures were and how this could of come to happen. Asked about different addresses and information they had, some of which were actually my correct address. They stated they had seized a package coming from Mexico sent to my home address containing over 50k in USD$ and some illicit drugs and paraphernalia. The gentleman I was speaking to was very cordial and has a slight central American accent (or Latin) which is not usually common of scammers to have, at least not for me.
The agent gave me his full name, badge ID, claims # and the number I could reach them back at if need be (easy to get CBP # from online).
They asked if I knew someone in Mexico that may have wanted to send me a package, if I'd have a recent break in to my home or vehicle (which I have) or if I knew anyone that may have access to my social security number which may live with me. All valid questions and again, I did have someone break into my vehicle and though they didn't take anything. I did have an empty check book with my banking routing and bank account, as well as my W-2 at the time, though it did not contain my social security # or even the last 4.
Afterwards the agent asked if I banked with any of the 7 standard banking institutions (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, ect ect) at which point I caught wind of something being wrong. I said yes (since they just asked if I banked with one of them) and then he repeated himself. I said yes again, and this time he repeated himself again but requested I tell him WHICH one. At that point I told him to wait while I did a quick search of the number given to me and check r/Scams to see if anyone had mentioned this before and I thankfully found this link from CBP directly stating there has been an increase in scam calls lately and everything matched up to what I was reading.
At that point, I told the person I would call them back and using both his Badge ID, and Case Number I would get in contact with them and provide them the info he was requesting. Well he fumbled over his words "umm yeah, okay, yeah, I mean this is a recorded line, but I guess, umm you don't have to call us back we can continue now" and I said "no it's okay I'll call you back" and he aggravated said "Yeah okay, do whatever you want" and hung up.
So hopefully this helps one of y'all. Stay careful friends!
