Put me in the subreddit Jail but I really enjoy living in Dallas
Im 29 y/o liberal leaning politically and moved to Dallas in 2021 from the midwest and have enjoyed living here since.
What I like:
- Diversity - Dallas is extremely diverse in all ways, race, religion, politics. Not only is it inherently diverse at a census level but most neighborhoods are fairly mixed rather than certain groups separating themselves into specific neighborhoods. My apartment building for example looks like a hotel at the Olympics with the variety of people we have living here.
-Food - with diversity comes great food. BBQ and Mexican options are great as you might expect, but we also have an excellent selection of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, Mediterranean, cuisines.
-variety of housing options - Dallas has a ton of housing options both old and new builds, You can live in a more suburban neighborhood or a dense walkable area. if you like luxurious newly built home and apartments there are plenty.
-job market/economy - There are a tons of high paying jobs in the area with many corporations moving here. I don't know of anyone that has struggled to find a job or move to a new one.
-airport - the DFW airport is the nicest easiest to use airport I have ever been in the US. Daily flights all over the world.
- Winter weather - winters here are very mild outside of the maybe 1 week of snow. Coming from the Midwest where winters can have you feeling like you are on Planet Hoth. the power grid has not been an issue for me so far.
-exciting growth - they are constantly building, new restaurants, and other attractions are constantly opening. there is always something new to checkout.
COL - I dont think Dallas is "cheap" anymore but I think the cost of living is still attractive for being such a large city with tons to offer.
Day trip opportunities - you can easily visit Austin, Houston, San Antonio, NW Arkansas, Brokenbow Oklahoma over a weekend for a change of scenery and/or more nature.
Cons:
sprawl- Dallas is very spread out and requires a lot of driving. I personally enjoy cars and driving so this isn't the biggest con for me personally.
lack of nature - There isnt alot of nature besides a few trails, and lakes. I'm not the biggest outdoorsman so this isn't a deal breaker for me.
Summer heat - it gets very hot in the summer, as someone who is mostly indoors this isn't a deal breaker for me either.
Overall I think this subreddit just writes off Texas based on its politics. In my experience Dallas may not be a beautiful nature filled travel destination but it is a great place to work and spend your day to day life.
