I always wondered why our tub shifted a lot and the silicone always separated... Near the front and back of the tub. Now demo'ing the bathroom i understand why...
Bought our home in 2023, and we never really liked the main floor bathroom. The original corners were grouted, cracked, moldly, and gross. When I removed the grouted corners it was a b**** to caulk because the bathtub shifted so much under weight. Got to the point where I didn't care how aestheticly bad the caulking job was at the wall/tub interface as long as the caulking didn't crack and separate. Had some leaking problems because the cracked faucet was repaired with Teflon tape shoved in the crack instead of buying a new faucet for like $30. Overall, we couldn't wait to start remodeling.
Anyways, I stared demo'ing the bathroom this past weekend. As I pulled out the old tub the subfloor under it was 1/2 drywall... No wonder the tub shifted so much under weight!
I'll be ripping out and replacing the subfloors drywall and wood) since it's pretty rotted around the edge were the bathtub, sink and toilet. I'll also be replacing the 3 valve setup with a single mix valve.
Thankfully, I had a sneaky suspicion that the previous owners did a terrible job at the old bathroom remodel.
