Drive from SJ to El Yunque scary?

Undecided if we are using a tour or renting cars, but either way how is the drive there? Is it mountainous? Expressway? Backroads? Cliffs? Curves? We have a couple people that are scared of mountains/heights, generally curvy mountain roads with views.
