Advice for Mini PC and DAS Set-Up
Hello!
I'm new to Plex and server hosting in general and would appreciate some advice.
I'm putting together a mini PC and DAS server. The goal is to create a server capable of multiple concurrent users viewing at high resolution via remote access. My budget is around $800-$1000.
Side note: I'm living in Switzerland, so listed prices may look off and my options for hardware may be different than typical US availability.
The mini PC I'm looking at is the above pictured Lenovo IdeaCentre Mini ($570):
- Intel Core i5-13420H processor with 8 cores
- 16 GB SO-DIMM RAM
- 1 TB SSD storage
- Intel UHD Graphics
The DAS I am looking at is the QNAP TR-004 ($250):
- 4 Bay USB Type-C Direct Attached Storage with Hardware RAID
Rounding it out with a Seagate IronWolf NAS 4 TB Hard Drive ($115) and a Linux OS (TBD).
I'm ready to pull the trigger on buying these but figured it would be a good idea to ask others with more experience first. Am I looking in the right direction and any thoughts on the limitations for this set-up? Is this overkill for what I'm looking to do? Should I be concerned with running this set-up 24/7 and potential noise/heat? Any recommendations for a newbie who is trying to learn?
I've done a decent amount of research but am concerned about spending so much for it to potentially be non-optimal or even outright non-functioning.
Cheers and thanks!
