Passport status
I currently owe $900 to the IRS for my 2020 tax return and did not file for the years 2022 or 2023. Now that I have secured a well-paying job and am back on my feet, I plan to file all three years together this year.
I applied for my passport in mid-February, and its status recently changed from “processing” to “status not available.” After researching potential reasons, I learned that passport applications may be denied due to unpaid taxes. However, I was under the impression that only tax debts exceeding $59,000 would result in passport restrictions. I am unsure if not filing taxes for multiple years could also impact my application.
The past two years have been difficult for me, but I am actively working to resolve my tax situation. I am particularly concerned because I am a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding in Jamaica this May. Does anyone have experience with a similar situation or know if this could prevent me from receiving my passport? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
