Getting new passport when expired one is missing in my house

I would like to get a new US passport issued for identification purposes. Ut would technically be a renewal, but I cannot locate the old one. (I'm sure it's somewhere in my house, but I'm having no luck finding it.) Can I apply for a renewal, or will I need to declare the most recent one lost?

Some background: I've had 2 passports in my life. The first one was issued in 1995, under my maiden name. The second one was issued as a renewal in/around 2005. At that time, I sent in my first passport along with my paperwork (including documentation of my marriage and name change.) The first passport was returned with the new one, with punch holes in it to make it unusable.

I have used the newer passport as ID in the past (I don't drive, therefore have no driver's license,) but misplaced it somewhere within my incredibly disorganized home. I have not been able to locate it, and feel like I should just let it go for now and get a new one. But then I wonder if I need to have it declared lost, and THEN I think that might look really bad... any help would ve great appreciated!
