Advice needed
I have been doing neuropsychology for years in university. I just got accepted to grad school. I know the wages are high, but I just don't think it's the kind of work I want to do. I've always entertained the idea of becoming a paramedic and now I've done more research and it seems like a realistic career for me and my personality type. I love helping others and am able to keep my cool, and I feel as if becoming a paramedic would lead to a better, life fulfilling, more directly helpful job than the lab work of neuropsychology. Don't get me wrong, neuropsychology is important, however being a lackey for large companies researching neuropsychology(or alternatively teaching university classes) can often times feel vague and distant from what I really want to do.
I've weighed some pros and cons. I would like to know, why shouldn't I become a paramedic? Why should I? I know there is a sunk-cost fallacy because I already have a psychology degree. I want the new experiences, to see raw, real life and help others as much as I can in real time. What wages can I expect? I'm not too worried in that aspect, as long as I can get above $40k a year honestly I'm happy. I live in an urban area of middle tennessee and want to move to the Chicago metro area after I am finished with education and gain some experience.
To be honest I'm most worried about the frequency of accidents with ambulances. I'm also worried about what my family will think about it(they basically just want me to do grad school so they can brag about me) but I'm sure I can shake that off.
Please tell me the drawbacks and what I need to look out for given my situation, and thank you.
