Can you avoid the guns?

I have a kid. This seems like it would be a fun game at surface level to play with them except the obvious, guns. Is it possible to avoid them? I saw you dont even get guns for awhile. I wouldnt mind just chilling, building a base, maybe capturing some pals with her. But it there is no way to avoid them, can just move on and wait one day when shes a bit older.
