Just got my physical Maya Landers cc and would like to share my review and experiences about the card

The card itself:

  • It feels flimsy --- not so premium for a Visa Platinum card. Ngl the Landers membership card itself is even better than this huhu basta it feels cheap. As a girlie whose cards naturally peel out of overtime use, I just hope this won't look abused six months later.
  • Fair enough, I like the monotone holographic design of the card. The back of the card is giving typical Maya card design and has the barcode of your Landers membership so this can be scanned at the entrance and checkout.
  • Given this is a plastic credit card, contactless works.

In-store transactions:

  • I don't have a picture of the receipts of my in-store purchases with it, pero if you check the application label in it, it will say 'VISA CREDIT', so this is, indeed, a credit card. This is unlike my Atome Card which says 'Debit Mastercard' in the application label.
  • Since the card does not have the Bancnet network, it is purely a Visa card. This means it is not indeed a debit card. As a result, contactless payments will very much work at most stores---even with white Maya terminals that now prompt Bancnet cards to be inserted for PIN verification.
  • Speaking of contactless, it will work at most merchants' terminals. Although, this statement won't apply to SM stores (even its subsidiaries like Watson's, Uniqlo, Miniso, etc.) with blue BDO terminals; it will still ask the card to be inserted but no PIN verification. I just wonder if Maya and BDO will update their terminals' firmware to allow contactless for Maya credit cards. This may be likely because SM terminals recognise the card as a foreign credit card. (Read further for elaboration). Other stores with BDO terminals are likely exempt from this limitation; hit-or-miss sya basically.

Online transactions:

  • Charges a 2.5% foreign transaction fee for merchants whose payment processing system is not based in the Philippines---this includes transactions charged in Philippine Peso. Expect to be charged a 2.5% fee in addition to the transaction amount for foreign stores like Wise, Google, SHEIN, iTunes, Netflix, Canva, etc. Use the Visa currency conversion site to calculate expected charges.
  • A weird thing about this card is that Shopee and Google recognises my card as a Korean credit card (specifically a Samsung Card), albeit when the 3DS/OTP verification window pops up, it shows the logo of Maya. This is why SM store terminals require cardholders to insert this card; contactless payment at SM stores only works for local credit cards daw since foreign cards sometimes asks for a PIN (sabi sakin ng manager of one SM dept store branch). From practical experience, I also am an authorised user of my friend's Hyundai and Samsung cards, so I know terminals may read this as a Korean credit card, since I know their bank identification numbers also, and SM stores require them to be inserted sa terminal.
  • Don't use this card for subscriptions or if you plan to save your card on a specific site before receiving your physical card since the digital card's CVV changes every time. This will cause Grab or other online transactions where your card is saved to decline.

Payment methods

  • The only way to pay for this card's balance is through the Maya app with your wallet; wala pa silang bills payment option from other banks or billers. This isn't particularly good for those who use other banks/e-wallets like GCash who want to avoid paying the InstaPay fee. So if you're like me and want to avoid paying InstaPay fees, my best advice is to cash in to Maya with a kiosk or transfer funds using a fee-free bank (i.e. GoTyme or Tonik).

Points and Rewards

  • This card advertises cashback but not all stores participate in them (?), and if anything, sa Landers mo lang din ma-aavail.

Overall:

  • Good starter credit card for students like me kasi it didn't ask for proof of income, etc.
  • Generous mamigay ng CL
  • Contactless works in most stores hindi lang sa mga SM stores, but I hope Maya and BDO works to fix this
  • Cashback only works at Landers, so it may not appeal to those na hindi suki ng Landers
