Thoughts about Salalah
It takes hours to get from MCT to SLL (and back). Google maps will tell you if there are mobile cameras along the way.
*
The bit that's most disconcerting is the fog when arriving. Some drivers still go really fast at that section.
*
Some (long to me) stretches of the road don't have many petrol stations. 50-100km is not considered far.
*
This year we shipped stuff there the evening before at 1 omr per box (like a Sohar chips carton). It was waiting for us by the time we arrived the next afternoon.
*
The places I've been to don't have fully equipped kitchens. There is typically a gas stove, fridge, and a washing machine. You get your own gas lighter, pans, crockery, laundry detergent etc in addition to the food to cook.
*
Lulu and Carrefour are great for equipping your stay. Just ask Google maps where they are.
*
This year we brought a portable gas stove and wood. I learned you can cook in drizzle.
*
The flies aren't really a bother, but there are also tiny biting insects whose bites itch a lot some time after. I think I got bitten at Darbat.
*
Bed bugs are a possibility. This year and last year I slept in a sleeping bag liner just in case. The first year I got bitten and slept with the lights on, which helped.
*
Public toilets are plentiful in SLL, but not during the drives there and back.
*
Fateyra Salalah is roti/prata with cheese and egg sliced into little squares. I prefer khubz Omani as the bread instead.
*
Kiddie rides cost so much!
*
I liked Silver Diamond, Hassan bin Thabit and Al Ghad for dinner. Costs ranged from 6+ to 8+ omr for 3 mains and water. These places have family rooms.
