Why do Americans identify as Italien, Irish, German etc?

Why is it that most Americans identify as other than American even though they have never been to the country the claim to be associated with while being a proud American whose great great grandfather immigrated?

Background: 1st generation German American. I moved here 30sone years ago and are a citizen and people tell me all the time they are German and they are not
