What manga are you shocked a publisher hasn’t translated or reprinted?
There are so many titles I would love to see translated but I understand that many of them are niche and wouldn’t necessarily be big sellers. However, it blows my mind that English publishers aren’t scrambling to translate/publish every work by Katsuhiro Otomo. He’s widely recognized as one of the best living cartoonists (with accolades like Eisner Award, Winsor McCay award, and the lifetime achievement award at Angouleme). A handful of his short stories were published in the 90s by Dark Horse and Mandarin, but are now severely OOP and go for insane prices online. With the success and influence of Akira it seems like a no-brainer. Publishers could be raking in the dough and manga readers/collectors would be ecstatic. The Complete works of Otomo are currently being released in Japan in gorgeous deluxe editions. What does it take to get something like that for English speakers? Kodansha did such a good job with the Akira deluxe box set. Fingers crossed there’s something (ANYTHING!) in the works. Titles like Domu, Fireball, Legend of the Mother Sarah, Sayonara Nippon, Short Peace, A Farewell to Weapons, Boogie Woogie Waltz, etc, should be widely accessible! Not to mention an art book or two.
Ok that’s my Otomo rant. What titles do you think English publishers are dropping the ball on?
