Questioning doctors' advice on Ativan dose and frequency
My sister has severe Long Covid which has triggered extremely severe ME/CFS. Her doctors recommend a low dose of Ativan daily to help calm down her nervous system which is "on fire", as her body is in a hyper-vigilant state. The dose of Ativan that she's taking daily currently is 0.125mg, it's been about a week since starting. One of the doctors is recommending going up to 0.375mg within the next week or two, with a maximum of 0.7mg later on. We are taking it slow and day by day but one of the doctors said maximum 6 months she would be on Ativan but we are extremely concerned about her taking it daily because of becoming desensitized slowly and having to increase the dose, and also habituation and potentially becoming addicted and having withdrawal symptoms because of dependency. We have heard from patients that Ativan should only be used as an emergency tool and taken only when you need to go to the doctor or emergency room. The doctors have reassured us that the dependency will not be an issue at this low dose and not an issue unless she takes it for years. Should we be concerned about this approach that doctors are telling us?
