[Waybound] Parallels between Reigan Shen and London
I've just finished reading through all 12 books and I'm about to start "Threshold" and I've got to say, this has been on hell of a ride! I absolutely fell in love with this world and the characters. As an entry point into the cultivation genre, I think this book series is a great start and I'd love to try out more books like this.
I do have a question about Reigan Shen, is he meant to be a dark reflection of Lindon? I know that NorthStrider is Lindon's monarch mentor figure but I feel like he has much more in common with Reigan Shen.
Both Lindon and Reigan Shen are very greedy and are willing to do anything for power. Reigan Shen has been shown to hoard vast treasures within his "Kings Key" void space. He swiftly punishes anyone who tries to take his power (including imprisoning his own children in pocket worlds). Lindon has several moments where his greed takes control and he puts himself in danger (Stealing from the sect in sacred valley, trying to steal from the Sandvipers and meeting Eithan, etc.)
Both have created their own path: The Kings Key path and the Twin Stars path
Both keep a little pal in their void space: Little Blue and the Aurelius Remnant
Both are known to try insane plans without any real escape options: Reigan Shen broke into the labyrinth and risking his life to awaken the dread gods, then turned a piece of the dread god into a weapon. Lindon tried to fight the wandering titan after saving his family, and then later fought several monarchs and also broke into the labyrinth to do the exact thing that Reigan Shen did.
It feels like the books are making it clear that Lindon could have potentially turned into another Reigan Shen had he been left alone to his devices. I think that the major thing that stopped him from becoming just like the lion was meeting Eithan and forming his little found family with the rest of the gang. Where Reigan Shen was alone, Lindon always had friends.
Perhaps if he had never met Eithan he would have suffered the same fate as Reigan Shen ultimately. Defeated by someone stronger, surrounded by all the treasures he's amassed. What do you guys think?
