How does the multiplier work?

I was under the impression that the purpose of merging witch cards was to improve multiplier scores.

Yesterday my multiplier was 80, then I merged a bunch of witch cards and today it’s been 58, 60, 61, 64. So beyond being apparently random it’s also considerably lower. What’s the deal?
