Pixel 8 Pro Modem side by side s22u

I almost did not buy this phone because of the comments on here about the modem. I do live in fringe VZW coverage and can say that this phone does fine with low signal. It actually seems to be more stable than my old s22u. I'm shocked and impressed. I was planning to keep my s22u for a while, but unfortunately the curved screen had other plans. I traded in the s22u, but I do have it for a few days still. So far I see no reason to test it anymore. The phones are about the same. If anything the p8p is slightly better. I may have just won the hardware lottery.

I also had issues with the s22u hanging onto band 2 way too long. Sometimes things wouldn't load and the phone needed to be toggled in airplane mode, or have band 2 disabled. The p8p does not have this issue. So that's a win also.

I cannot comment on 5g yet. I turn off 5g and only use LTE unless 5g is needed.

Right beside each other in my kitchen:

  • p8p - VZW band 13 LTE : fluctuating between -108 -110 dbm. Speedtest - 10mbps down, .6mbps up
  • s22u - VZW band 13 LTE: fluctuating between -107 -109 dbm. Speedtest - 8mbps down, .05mbps up.

At my desk :

  • p8p - VZW band 2 LTE : fluctuating between -105 -107 dbm. Speedtest - 50mbps down, 6.1mbps up.
  • s22u - VZW band 2 LTE: fluctuating between -113 -115 dbm. Speedtest - 30mbps down, 4.3mbps up.

I am happy about this. My pixel 2xl was the best phone I ever had. Hopefully this pixel 8 is the same. If you are worried about the modem don't be. There's so many reviews out there that say the modem sucks but they have full bars and nothing is loading. That's a carrier congestion issue. Not a phone issue.
