Taking walks might ruin the detox?!?!
"As a general rule, beware of anything that delivers high dopamine with minimal effort" - Andrew Huberman on X
I have recently been going out for walks almost every day. I do this in the afternoon after having a big post-workout meal. As I did this today, I found myself deeply enjoying the various sensations of nature around me.
The Sun peering though a thin layer of clouds, sparsely covered by tree branches with no leaves, which shone bright orange from the sunlight, filled me with satisfaction. Feeling the cold breeze against my face gave me great pleasure. I thought about what I was feeling and focused more on my various sensory receptors. The more I did that, I found myself deeply happy, feeling quite a bit of dopamine release in my body.
Andrew Huberman and others who have discussed dopamine detoxing in public forums often take a stance of - stay away from dopamine that you didn't earn.
Did I earn the dopamine that I experienced on the walk? Not really. I didn't put in any effort to get that dopamine. All I did was step out of my house and stroll; That is near 0 effort for me considering I go to the gym 6 days a week to train hard with weights. So it is clear this dopamine I got was very easy to get. No effort spent at all. Through the lens of the above mentioned quote, this must be a bad thing, right? And it most certainly must be harmful to dopamine detoxing! However, the same people (including Andrew Huberman) seem to be in favor of taking walks and being under the Sun.
Am I missing something or does there seem to be a logical paradox here?
