Can someone please explain guard to me?

Can someone please explain to me exactly how guard works? The only thing I can think of is it negates type advantage when an enemy attacks (i.e. you're STR and an AGI character attacks you), but I honestly don't really know. I'm embarrassed to ask because I think this was explained in-game during the tutorial at the beginning but that was years ago for me.
