DC fandom, we need to have a talk.

I love Disventure Camp, the show is so fun, I love the creative fandom and even the spirited discussions that we can have.

What I can’t deal with are fans insulting Jared and the ONC teams and making disgusting accusations about them based on a few suggestive jokes and the “sPiCY greEtIngs”. I’ve seen the ONC team be called all sorts of horrible things on this subreddit - that they’re fetishizers, objectify gay men, etc.

According to Jared, Disventure Camp is for ages 16+. For reference, Game of Thrones is rated 17+. You can find more explicit content in a Marvel movie than in any part of Disventure Camp. Yes, there are younger fans who watch the show regardless, but that’s the case with literally every piece of media. I don’t think Jared is really catering to or pandering to those fans.

I’ve seen Jared and the ONC team be called extremely insulting things over two canon moments - the TomJake episode where Jake invites Tom into his room and the All Stars credits scene where it’s implied James and Aiden are having a passionate reunion in their motel room. There is nothing wrong with ONC including this INCREDIBLY tame content in a 16+ show. Again, you would find more explicit content in virtually any piece of PG-13 media. They’re also not objectifying or reinforcing negative stereotypes by acknowledging that couples who are adults, well over the age of consent, and in committed relationships participate in intimacy. Canonically, Tom and Jake are literally engaged to each other, and James and Aiden have been in a relationship for over a year. I’m sorry you had to find this out through Disventure Camp, but barring religious views or the asexuality spectrum, most adult couples in committed relationships are doing more than chaste kissing. It would be one thing if Disventure Camp was showing us anything graphic but a few suggestive jokes are fine for a 16+ YouTube show . It doesn’t mean Disventure Camp is objectifying or fetishizing the characters because those words have meaning other than “acknowledging adult couples are intimate including when those couples are men.”

And as for the “spicy greetings” - greetings cost over $100, or $200 for a double greeting. The people paying for these greetings are adults. They could just write a fanfiction but instead they’re spending their money on supporting the show. If they want to ask a “spicy” question that the ONC team is okay with answering, that’s their right. Yes, it’s a little weird that Jake is answering how big Tom’s chest is but again, it’s nothing graphic and all parties involved were fine with writing and voicing it. Just don’t watch those greetings if it makes you uncomfortable. No one is being harmed by people finding a fictional cartoon of a 30 year old man hot.

The accusations and language that are being thrown around about the DC team is frankly disgusting, and it needs to stop. If you don’t like that the show is a 16+ show, you can watch one of the many other fan animations that exist. No one is forcing you to watch or engage with the fandom greetings.
