What’s Trump real end-goal with tariffs against Canada?
I understand leveraging tariffs on Mexico as a bargaining chip in the immigration discussion, but as I understand it that's not as important with Canada.
I've been out of the loop for a few months, but do the tariffs (provided that they're imposed for genuine economic reasons) admit to a fault in the USMCA? This was one of Trump's policy victories in his first term.
Edit: Thank you all for your input, you've given me more to consider than I immediately have time for. Some of the reasons you have listed are as follows:
Stop fentanyl crossing the northern border
Immigration across Us-Canada border
Pre-existing Canadian tariffs against the US (fair deal idea)
Re-shoring US industries
I'm not sure which one it is yet but I plan to research and think on each of them. Again, thank you all for your contributions.
