Mainland Chinese Dramas

This question probably sounds really naive, but when did Mainland Chinese dramas become a thing? I've been watching dramas for years, primarily Korean, but I have watched some Taiwanese dramas too. But somehow I've not realized until now that there are dramas from the mainland. Is this more recent or was I just oblivious? Lol
