Should I get a Squier Standard P Bass Special 1999-2010 and mod it or just get another bass?

I wan't to buy my first "real" bass because my first and only bass is from a weird unknown brand. So I was wondering if I should buy the squier and mod it to my likes and preferences or just get a better bass.

NOTE: I'm a left handed player and as you may or may not know we have very few options available in the market
