Customization tips for an AlphaSmart 3000?

I just ordered an AlphaSmart 3000 off Ebay, and I'm hoping to customize it after it arrives. I've found a couple videos of people customizing their AlphaSmarts, but there isn't much content showing how to customize these things out there, so I wanted to see if anyone here has any tips on how to not break my AlphaSmart while I work on it. My plan is to spray paint the body one color, and if I'm feeling brave I might do the keys another color and print out my own stickers for the keycaps. Any thoughts?
